Nigeria’s Super Falcons have retained their status as Africa’s top-ranked women’s football team in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking released on Friday, following their impressive performances in recent international fixtures.
According to the new ranking published by the world football governing body, the nine-time African champions remain first in Africa and have climbed two places globally to 30th, consolidating their dominance on the continent and reaffirming their resurgence on the world stage.
The Falcons’ rise comes on the back of their solid showings in recent friendly matches and the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers, where they recorded consecutive victories under head coach Randy Waldrum.
FIFA’s latest update also saw South Africa’s Banyana Banyana remain second in Africa and 52nd globally, followed by Morocco, who continue to impress after their breakout run at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The Super Falcons’ steady climb is being attributed to the team’s improved cohesion, tactical discipline, and the emergence of new talents such as Gift Monday and Deborah Abiodun, complementing the experience of stars like Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Reacting to the update, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Ibrahim Gusau said the ranking reflects the Falcons’ consistency and global respect earned through years of hard work.
“The Super Falcons have proven once again that they are Africa’s pride. Our focus now is to build on this momentum ahead of the next WAFCON and World Cup qualifiers,” Gusau stated.
Globally, Spain retained the top spot, followed by France, England, Germany, and the United States, which make up the top five ranked teams in women’s football.
Sports analysts say Nigeria’s improved ranking could attract more international friendlies and sponsorship opportunities, boosting visibility and preparation for future tournaments.
With the next WAFCON on the horizon, the Super Falcons’ strong position in the FIFA ranking has renewed optimism among fans that the team can reclaim continental glory and continue asserting their influence on the global scene.
