Smartphones Become Essential Tools in a Digitally Connected Nigeria

Smartphones rank fourth as Nigerians increasingly rely on mobile technology for communication, business, and access to digital services. Mobile banking, e-commerce, online education, and social media have made smartphones indispensable, particularly among young people and entrepreneurs.

Despite rising prices driven by import costs, currency fluctuations, and tariffs, demand for smartphones remains high. Industry reports indicate that over 80 million smartphones were sold in Nigeria in 2025, highlighting the country’s position as one of Africa’s largest consumer markets for mobile devices.

“The smartphone has transformed the way Nigerians work, learn, and interact,” says tech analyst Funke Adeyemi. “It is not just a gadget; it is an economic enabler, supporting microbusinesses and digital entrepreneurship.”

Telecom providers and retailers have also reported growth in accessory and service markets, further amplifying the smartphone’s economic footprint.
