Nigeria Slips in Latest Henley Passport Index Global Ranking

Nigeria’s passport has recorded another drop in global mobility, according to the 2025 Henley Passport Index released this week.

The index, which measures the strength of passports based on the number of destinations holders can enter without a prior visa, placed Nigeria among the lower-ranked countries worldwide.

Nigerian citizens can currently access fewer than 50 countries visa-free or with visa-on-arrival, a stark contrast to top-ranked nations such as Japan, Singapore, and Germany, whose passports allow entry into over 190 destinations.

Experts say the ranking reflects persistent challenges in Nigeria’s diplomatic relations, security concerns, and international perception, which continue to limit the travel freedom of its citizens.

The development has reignited conversations about the need for Nigeria to strengthen its global partnerships, improve governance, and negotiate better bilateral agreements to expand mobility opportunities for its citizens.
