At least 11 people were killed and several others injured after a fresh wave of Russian airstrikes hit multiple regions across Ukraine, Ukrainian officials confirmed on Monday, marking one of the deadliest single-day attacks in recent weeks.
The strikes, which reportedly targeted civilian infrastructure and residential areas, occurred in the early hours of the morning, prompting renewed international condemnation and fears of further escalation in the 28-month-long conflict.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said the attacks struck sites in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv, destroying homes, damaging power lines, and triggering fires in densely populated neighborhoods. Among the casualties were a mother and two children, according to local officials in Dnipropetrovsk region.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, reacting to the attacks, described them as “a cruel reminder that Russia’s war is not just against our military, but against ordinary civilians.” He once again called for increased Western support, particularly air defense systems.
“These attacks could have been prevented if Ukraine had more tools to defend its skies,” Zelensky said in a televised address.
The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the civilian deaths but claimed its latest operations targeted “military and logistical infrastructure” used by Ukrainian forces.
International reactions were swift. The European Union condemned the strikes as a “flagrant violation of international law,” while U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated America’s commitment to Ukraine’s defense and warned Moscow of further consequences.
Humanitarian groups working in eastern Ukraine say the latest attacks are complicating aid efforts and worsening the already dire conditions in frontline regions.
“This is a horrific setback for civilians already suffering from displacement, food shortages, and trauma,” said Natalia Demchenko, a coordinator for Doctors Without Borders in Kharkiv.
The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions. As peace efforts remain stalled and military operations intensify, concerns are mounting over the conflict’s growing human toll.
